Garage Door Installation Rockland County

The garage doors on our homes and businesses often face the street. They are typically the biggest doors on a structure and are the first things we see from the street on a building’s façade. Americans use their garage doors more than any other door in their homes, including the front door. And while smooth operation and reliable service are important aspects of a garage door beyond its looks, a new garage door for a home or business can deliver a windfall in curb appeal points; a new garage door can improve a home’s market value by as much as 20 percent.

Four types of garage doors

When considering a new or replacement garage door for your home or business, factor in to your decision the type of garage that needs to be secured and what its needs are. A busy commercial garage door will operate a lot more frequently than the garage door on a residence. A wood door may be attractive and rich-looking for a home, but an insulated and fire-resistant metal door may be indicated for an industrial application. A slider may offer more functionality than a top-roll door. The four most common types of garage doors are:

Sliders—Sliders are often heavy or very large solid doors that operate as one piece as it rolls toward the sides of the opening to reveal the opening. Airplane hangars are often-seen applications for slider garage doors.

Swing out—typically a pair of solid doors that join in the middle of the opening and that are hinged on the sides of the doors where they meet the structure. Barn doors are common examples of swing-out doors. Sliders and swing-out doors are especially useful where the ceiling of a garage needs to remain free from interference by a roll-up or swing-door.

Swing up—an old-fashioned option for many mid-century American homes, swing-up garage doors are a solid door that is hinged at the top of the door where it meets the structure and is counter-weighted to make opening and closing the door easily.

Roll up—individual door panels are hinged together and roll along an installed track on either side of the interior of the opening. The door panels travel along the track as the door is opened and, when opened, they rest parallel to the garage ceiling. There are even tracks that are specially made for garages with unusually high walls or cathedral ceilings. Roll-up doors are the most commonly seen garage doors for residential applications.
